Old news

There’s no avoiding wet feet if you’re caught out in the type of short, sharp rain shower which has been typical of this year’s weather; the type of heavy shower that followed me on a ride earlier this week.

Riding in the rain comes with the territory for cyclists in the UK. If you hide under the duvet every time rain splatters against the windowpane then you won’t get out on the bike much at all.

But there’s little worse than slipping your feet into wet shoes for the next day’s ride and, while modern cycling kit is packed with technology, stuffing your shoes with newspaper remains the best way of drying out sodden shoes.

It’s an age-old trick, passed down the years from cyclist to cyclist – and sometimes, old school is the best school.
