Wilier BB386EVO to debut on Zero-7

Wilier’s BB386EVO bottom bracket will debut on the Italian manufacturer’s Zero-7 machine in 2012.

The BB386EVO has been developed to overcome the shortcomings of the Cento1, which can only accept traditional cranksets with a 24mm steel or titanium spindle, and BB30, which requires a 68mm wide bottom bracket shell on the frame, which Wilier say is not wide enough to be super stiff.

The new bottom bracket system can be used in conjunction with a crankset developed in collaboration with FSA, with an 86.5mm shell and 46mm diameter opening.

“This special FSA crank offers the maximum stiffness and function for this BB system, but it is not required,” says Wilier’s press release. “All major cranksets are compatible with the use of adapters. Moreover, the FSA crank is compatible with a traditional 68mm BB with the use of threaded cups.”

Wilier’s head of research and development Michele Gastaldello said: “Results yielded in testing surprised even us. In the laboratory, stiffness in the Zero-7 bottom bracket area proved at least 30 per cent superior to all of the standard BB30 systems we analysed.

“The frame itself weighs less than 800 grams, so we are proud to announce the creation of a bike that will absolutely empower riders to conquer whatever challenges come their way.”
