National Madison Championships – report

Mark Christian and Simon Yates have been crowned National Madison Champions after a convincing victory at the Manchester velodrome on Saturday (28).

The pair, riding the colours of the 100% ME team, finished ahead of Alex Dowsett and Tom Murray (Sky Pro Cycling/Sigma Sport Specialized), and George Atkins and Owain Doull. Christian and Yates won the first, second, and fourth sprints, ceding the third sprint to Dowsett and Murray.

Team 100% ME had established a hold on the competition with half of the events completed, with Christian and Yates leading from second-placed teammates, Tom Moses and Alistair Slater.

Dowsett and Murray gained a lap, but Christian and Yates responded by taking a lap of their own and defending their lead.

A further sprint victory established their front-running position, leaving Dowsett and Murray to improve on their bronze medal of 2011 and take silver.

“A bit more track time and we’d have been there. Perhaps next year we can finish one place higher!” said Dowsett.

George Atkins and Owain Doull won the bronze medal.
