Prendas Windtex/Super Roubaix Underhelmet Cap – review

A skull cap – or underhelmet cap, as Prendas call it here – provides much-needed protection for your head when riding in cold weather and this one combines Windtex and Super Roubaix fabrics to great effect.

Helmet manufacturers are forever keen to boast about how many vents they can squeeze onto their lid, which is great for the summer, when the in-rushing air – on a descent, for example – provides welcome relief from the heat. Problem is, when the temperature drops it provides an all too convenient entry point for freezing air.

Skull caps are simple enough, although Prendas’ has an additional Windtex panel to provide increased protection from the elements at the front of your head, which will feel the full force of cold winter air.

The rest of the cap (RRP £14.50), which hides unobtrusively beneath a helmet, is made from a Super Roubaix fabric, which is soft, fleecy and warm on the inside but breathable enough to stop moisture building up. The combination of the Windtex panel and Super Roubaix lining mean this hat is warmer than most, so best saved for truly low temperatures, although it’s lightweight and small enough to be whipped off and tucked into a jersey pocket if you begin to overheat.

The cap’s only available in one size but the cut (dropped on either side) ensures your ears are kept cosy and there’s enough stretch in the fabric to keep those of us with bigger heads covered. A reflective hem, new on this updated version of the hat, finishes the job.
