With the taste of champagne still fresh from his hundredth victory, Mark Cavendish turned his attention to capturing the hundred and first.

Victory in Cherasco came largely as a result of his own efforts, and to watch him barge his way into spaces, and dart from the wheels of his rivals was to watch the world’s best in his natural environment.

His OPQS team-mates rode at the front for much of the day, but when the chips went down in the closing kilometres, Cavendish was left to fend for himself. He didn’t seem to mind.

Stefano Sirotti, our man with the camera in cycling’s elite WorldTour peloton, was on hand to capture these beautiful images.

Manx Missile sweeps to victory while Vincenzo Nibali retains overall lead

Mark Cavendish won a fourth stage of the 2013 Giro d’Italia today, a day after claiming his 100th professional victory.

The points leader made his own luck after finding himself devoid of team-mates in the closing kilometre of the longest stage of the race, a 254km drag from Busseto to Cherasco.

After banging shoulders with Leonardo Duque (Team Columbia), Cavendish fought his way through to outdrag Giacomo Nizzollo (Radioshack-Leopard) and Luka Mezgec (Argos-Shimano) in the final kick for the line.

Mark Cavendish, resplendent in the red jersey of points leader, raises four fingers in triumph

“It’s a bit of a bonus and an extra trophy, but I am so tired,” an exhausted Cavendish said afterwards. “I don’t know how I’m going to recover from this before the mountains, really.

“It’s a common misconception that people think sprinters are lazy. The amount of effort it takes out of you, especially when you’re alredy on the limit, it really damages you for a few days.

“I had to go from 350 metres after a hard day. I’m on my knees. All I had to do was go and not look back.”

Cavendish revealed that he didn’t want to contest the sprint today, but sports director, Brian Holm, had given the instruction after Cannondale Pro Cycling and Orica-GreenEDGE had raised the tempo.

The Manx man gave his usual lavish praise of his team-mates, who had spent much of the closing 30km at the head of the bunch, whittling down the advantage of a group that contained Nicola Boem (Bardiani-Valvole), Pablo Lastras (Movistar), Tobias Ludvigsson (Argos-Shimano), Danilo Hondo (Radioshack-Leopard), Lars Bak (Lotto-Belisol), and Jairus Ermeti (Androni-Venezeula).

With 40km remaining, the group had been reduced to just three riders – Boem, Lastras, and Bak – who held a slender 40-second advantage as they toiled up the second category climb of Tre Cuni.

Some 15km later, and the gap had been reduced to 25 seconds with 25km remaining. Cavendish’s men continued to set tempo, while the GC contenders, notably Cadel Evans (BMC Racing), rode alongside to keep out of trouble.

Boem was the first of the breakaway trio to crack, and 16km from the finish he found himself passed by team-mate, Franco Bongiorno, who had attacked from the bunch with Frederick Veuchelen (Vacansoleil-DCM).

Vincenzo Nibali enjoyed a quiet day in the maglia rosa of race leader

Perhaps sensing the ratcheting-up of pressure from behind, Bak attempted to rid himself of Lastras on the uncategorised rise of the Punte sul Tarano. While his attack was successful, it was short-lived, and both men were soon caught by a small group that splintered from the front of the bunch.

Lastras, after being briefed by a team-mate, continued with the new breakaway, now nine-men strong, and containing Katusha’s Giampaolo Caruso.

The Italian was the next to attack, and looked to have made a decisive move, quickly establishing a 15-second lead as he passed under the 5km to go banner, his arms draped across the bars, time trial-style.

But on the long-flat run in to Cherasco, Caruso remained painfully in sight of a remorseless peloton, now driven by Cannondale Pro Cycling, who cut his lead almost by half within two kilometres.

No sooner had they had reeled in Caruso, just 1.5 kilometres from the line, however, than the Italian squad was forced to cede ground to Orica-GreenEDGE.

The Australian and Italian teams led the fast men under the flamme rouge, and with Cavendish stranded, and twice boxed in, the game looked up for the 2011 world road race champion.

Cavendish, however, should never be discounted, and lighting the afterburners, he swung to the right of the road with Mezgec on his wheel, and set about passing Nizzolo.

As he crossed the line, Cavendish raised a hand to display four fingers, indicating his win tally from this year’s Giro campaign.

Bradley Wiggins (Team Sky) started the 2013 Giro d’Italia as pre-race favourite, bidding to add a second Grand Tour to his palmares, but would leave the race ahead of stage 13 with that dream in tatters.

The Tour de France champion, who had struggled with the wet weather conditions throughout the first week of the race, was withdrawn by his team on medical grounds due to a “worsening chest infection”.

Wiggins went into stage 12 in fourth overall, two minutes and five second behind race leader Vincenzo Nibali (Astana), but lost more than three minutes after being dropped 40km from the finish. The 33-year-old will now return to the UK for treatment.

“We monitored Bradley overnight and this morning we’ve withdrawn him from the Giro after consulting the team doctor,” said Team Sky principal Dave Brailsford. “His chest infection has been getting worse and our primary concern is always the health of our riders.

“As a passionate racer he wanted to continue but he is simply unable to do so on medical grounds.”

Bradley Wiggins (Team Sky) has withdrawn from the Giro d’Italia ahead of stage 13 on medical grounds.

The Tour de France champion, who had dropped to 13th overall, two minutes and four seconds behind race leader Vincenzo Nibali (Astana), is suffering from a chest infection and will return to the UK for treatment.

Team Sky will now ride in support of stage ten winner Rigoberto Uran, who is third in the general classification, two minutes and four seconds adrift of the maglia rosa.

Bradley Wiggins will return to the UK for treatment having abandoned the Giro d’Italia due to a chest infection

Team principal Dave Brailsford said: “We monitored Bradley overnight and this morning we’ve withdrawn him from the Giro after consulting the team doctor. His chest infection has been getting worse and our primary concern is always the health of our riders.

“Bradley will return to the UK today for treatment and to rest and we hope to have him back on the road as soon as possible.

“As a passionate racer he wanted to continue but he is simply unable to do so on medical grounds.”

Wiggins went into the race as favourite, bidding to add a second Grand Tour to his palmares having become the first Briton to win the Tour de France last July.

But the 33-year-old endured a difficult first week, crashing on a wet descent on stage seven to concede more than a minute to his rivals for the title, before failing to win back the deficit in his specialist event, the individual time trial, on stage eight.

Wiggins lost more time on stage ten, the first high mountains summit finish of the race, and, with his chest infection worsening, was dropped from the peloton on stage 12, on which Mark Cavendish (Omega Pharma-QuickStep) recorded his 100th professional victory.

“Brad developed a head cold and a chest infection and has been on antibiotics,” said Brailsford after stage 12. “His illness has got progressively worse and we knew ahead of the race this morning it was going to be tough for him to get through the stage.

“When you see a rider of Bradley Wiggins’s calibre struggling to hold the wheel in front of him on the flat, you know that he is ill.

“When you are ill, you are ill and all you can do is your best to try and manage that illness. I think he showed great courage to battle through the stage to the finish.”

Meanwhile, defending champion Ryder Hesjedal (Garmin-Sharp) has also quit the race.

The Canadian lost more than 20 minutes on the first mountain stage and, after continuing to struggle on stages 11 and 12, had slipped to 38th overall, 32 minutes and 55 seconds adrift of Nibali.

“The conditions on Thursday’s rainy, cold stage combined with Hesjedal’s deteriorating physical condition proved too much,” Hesjedal’s team said in a statement.

Hesjedal added: “It’s heartbreaking. I built my entire season around the Giro and I came here feeling great, but I have been suffering since the time trial.”

Kristian House (Rapha Condor JLT) has won the Durham round of the 2013 Pearl Izumi Tour Series, repeating his victory of 12 months ago.

The Texan chased down a move by Ian Bibby (Madison-Genesis), rode clear when his rival suffered mechanical woes, and held off a determined pursuit by the combined forces of Raleigh and Team UK Youth.

House’s second victory cements an enviable record on the cobbled streets of the historic city: he is yet to finish outside the top six in four visits to the north east, and has finished off the podium just once.

Kristian House celebrates victory in Durham in the 2013 Pearl Izumi Tour Series

House said: “At first when the group was whittled down, I tried to take things easily, because Ed [Clancy] had been caught behind and I knew that for the team race we needed numbers in the front. Eventually though when John [Herety - team manager] told me the others weren’t coming back behind I knew it was time to go.”

His latest victory also propelled him to the top of the IG Sprint standings after sweeping up bonus points as he led the field home.

Raleigh maintained their lead in the team standings by posting three riders in the top 10. The New Zealander, Tom Scully, continued his excellent season by finishing fifth, ahead of team-mates, Evan Oliphant, who was sixth, and seventh placed Lachlan Norris.

After two rounds, the Nottingham-based outfit has a four-point margin over Team UK Youth at the top of team leader board, with Madison-Genesis third in the team’s debut season.

Roger Hammond’s men delivered a strong performance to place two riders in the top 10. Andy Tennant, a world champion on the track, was fourth, while Bibby recovered to finish eighth.

Bibby had delivered the first significant move of the race by riding clear of the bunch. House responded and the pair rode together briefly before the challenge of the Madison-Genesis man was curtailed by mechanical issues.

The next round of the Pearl Izumi Tour Series will be held on Tuesday (May 21), when the series will return to Stoke-on-Trent.

Contrasting fortunes for Mark Cavendish and Bradley Wiggins

Mark Cavendish (Omega Pharma-QuickStep) and Bradley Wiggins (Team Sky) could barely have had more contrasting days at the Giro d’Italia.

While the Manx Missile claimed his 100th professional victory, Tour de France champion Wiggins saw his already slim hopes of winning the title evaporate on a stage held in torrential rain from start to finish.

Stage 12 offered the sprinters a rare chance of victory after a succession of hilly stages and Cavendish needed no second invitation to continue his fine form at the 2013 Giro, recording a third stage win after the break was caught inside the final 500m.

Wiggins, meanwhile, went into the 134km stage in fourth overall, two minutes and five seconds behind maglia rosa Vincenzo Nibali (Astana), but ended the day in 13th after losing another three minutes and 17 seconds.

The 33-year-old has been suffering from a chest infection and finished the stage reportedly complaining of knee pain.

These images from Stefano Sirotti tell the story of Cavendish’s triumph and Wiggins’ tribulations.

Manx Missile wins stage 12 of Giro d'Italia

Mark Cavendish claimed his 100th professional win with victory on a rain-soaked stage 12 of the 2013 Giro d’Italia.

The Manx Missile outsprinted Nacer Bouhanni (FDJ) and Luka Mekgec (Argos-Shimano) to record his third stage win of this year’s race and return to the top of the points classification.

Mark Cavendish (Omega Pharma-QuickStep) claims his 100th professional win

But any lingering hopes help by Team Sky leader, Bradley Wiggins, of winning the race were dealt a knockout blow. The Tour de France champion, who is suffering from a chest infection, lost three minutes and 17 seconds after being dropped on the descent of the day’s second climb, 40km from the finish.

Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) continues to lead the race, 41 seconds ahead of Cadel Evans (BMC Racing).

Cavendish, who also won stages one and six, paid tribute to his team-mates after adding a 100th victory to his palmares.

“I’m happy that I could do it here at the Giro d’Italia, but more than the fact I’ve won here, I’m proud of how we did it,” he said. “We came here with the intentions of trying to win every sprint. We haven’t just won every sprint, we’ve won it quite convincingly. We controlled the peloton from start to finish today, in quite horrid conditions.”

The 27-year-old continued: ”They really rode with their heads, and also with their hearts, the whole team. They really did something special today, each and every one of them. So, that’s what has made me proud of this Giro more than the actual wins.”

The first half of the 2013 Giro has been dogged by poor weather but stage 12 saw the riders faced with rain so heavy the race organisers announced they would neutralise the finale, taking times at three kilometres to go, before the peloton had even rolled out of Longarone.

Five riders - Fabio Felline (Androni Giocattoli-Venezuela), Marco Marcato and Maurits Lammertink (Vacansoleil-DCM), Maxim Belkov (Katusha) and Bert De Backer (Argos-Shimano) – formed the day’s break less than ten kilometres into the stage.

The group held an advantage of a little more than two minutes with 50km remaining, ahead of the the second of two short, sharp category four climbs and Cavendish’s Omega Pharma-QuickStep team-mate, Jérôme Pineau, led the chasing peloton down the subsequent descent.

Bradley Wiggins (Team Sky) rolled across the line more than three minutes after Cavendish

It was there that Wiggins, who had been languishing at the back of the peloton for much of the stage, fell off the pace, struggling both with illness and the slick roads, and Christian Knees, Dario Cataldo, Danny Pate, Xabier Zandio, Kanstantsin Siutsou and Salvatore Puccio all dropped back to help the 33-year-old, leaving Rigoberto Uran, who is now third overall in the general classification, as Team Sky’s sole representative in the main group.

But with the peloton roaring along in anticipation of a bunch sprint, Wiggins failed to regain contact and saw his already slim hopes of adding a second Grand Tour to his palmares evaporate. Team Sky principal Dave Brailsford confirmed after the stage that the team will now ride in support of Uran.

“We are in a great position in the race,” said Brailsford. “We are still in a very good position on GC and I think we have got a very strong team and they are all very motivated and they will continue to ride for Rigoberto, so the team doesn’t lose its purpose.”

Cavendish, meanwhile, smelt blood and the breakaway saw its lead cut to 27 seconds going into the final 7.5km finishing circuit in Treviso, with Omega Pharma-QuickStep, Orica-GreenEDGE and Cannondale all working to reel in the escapees.

But the monsoon-like weather played into the leaders’ hands and the group continued to keep the peloton at bay, only succumbing inside the final 500m to setup a bunch sprint, leaving Cavendish to jump from the wheel of leadout man Gert Steegmans with 150m to go to claim his 13th Giro d’Italia stage win.

Cavendish added: ”It was incredible. We left it until right at the end. The break had a minute with 10km to go. That’s hard to pull back on a circuit in the rain. Cannondale came to the front but it was more left to my men.

Young Julien Vermote pulled and pulled until his legs couldn’t come around anymore. Matteo Trentin normally would come to the front with about 1km to go, but with 2.5km to go he took over and just rode and rode.

“It wasn’t easy as we were close to not catching the break. Gert Steegmans could have gone and left me in ‘no man’s land,’ but he waited and waited. I was actually stressing a bit to be honest. But I’m so happy, my 100th win and what a way to do it with the guys. I’m so proud.”

The Lithuanian attacked from a breakaway group of about 20 riders with Daniel Oss (BMC Racing), caught and passed lone leader Patrick Gretsch (Argos-Shimano) and then rode Oss from his wheel to win alone. Impressive.

Still more so, is that the Lithuanian’s previous WorldTour victory, one achieved less than a month ago at the Tour de Romandie, was taken in a sprint. Did someone say “versatile”?

The breakaway action was the focal point of today’s stage on a tough, rather than crippling 182km parcours from Tarvisio to Varjont that saw the GC contenders pause for breath, perhaps for the first time.

Bradley Wiggins (Team Sky) will have welcomed the respite, but for defending champion, Ryder Hesjedal (Garmin-Sharp) it came too late.

The Canadian appeared to draw solace from news of his team-mate’s triumph, even though it was imparted to him from the team car, while he was still far from the finish.

Here’s another full screen gallery of all the action from official UCI WorldTour photographer, Stefano Sirotti.

All the action from the 182km medium mountain stage from Tarvisio to Vajont

Ramunas Navardauskas (Garmin-Sharp) soloed to victory after a late attack from a breakaway of about 20 riders to win stage 11 of the 2013 Giro d’Italia.

The Romanian, winner last month of stage two of the Tour de Romandie, broke clear with Daniel Oss (BMC Racing), who finished second.

The pair caught long-time leader, Patrick Gretsch (Argos-Shimano), just 12.5km from the finish at Vajont, but 2.5km later dropped the German.

With 5km to go, Navardauskas was riding alone, a position he would maintain to the finish at the summit of the 809m closing climb.

Ramunas Navardauskas celebrates victory on stage eleven of the 2013 Giro d’Italia

Race leader, Vincenzo Nibali (Astana), finished safely among the group of favourites some five and a half minutes later, a bunch that included Cadel Evans (BMC Racing), second overall, and Britain’s Bradley Wiggins, who remains fourth.

Today’s 182km slog, one classified by race organisers as taking place in “medium mountains”, included only one climb of note before the finale. The 1,790 metre summit of the second category Sella Ciampigotto was crested after 120km.

Twenty riders broke clear 20km ahead of the climb, however, making an early bid for victory with 100km still remaining.

Former maglia rosa, Salvatore Puccio (Team Sky) was among the riders the peloton was content to let go. With only Nibali’s Astana squad, Lotto-Belisol, and Michele Scarponi’s Lampre-Merida outfit unrepresented, most of the bunch had no incentive to chase.

With 50km remaining, and the downward gradient of the Sella Ciampigotto beneath his wheels, Gretsch took flight in a long-range bid for victory, perhaps his team’s only hope, following the withdrawal of stage five winner, the sprinter, John Degenkolb.

Gretsch produced a fine ride, but was unable to hold off Navardauskas and Oss as they approached, and unable to hold on to them as they departed on the last stretch of flat road before the final climb.

Navardauskas made a first attempt to ride himself of Oss shortly afterwards, while the Italian, clearly suffering, drank from his bottle, but the BMC man dug deep to ride back up to the Lithuanian’s wheel.

With five kilometres to go, however, the elastic snapped and Navardauskas rode clear of Oss, who ground out a gutsy ride to finish second.

With the leading pair home and dry, king of the Mountains leader, Stefano Pirazzi (Bardiani-Valvole), attacked from the remains of a chasing group some 2.15 down the road, and held on to collect third.

The maglia rosa group arrived some time afterwards at a leisurely pace, the GC contenders content for a day’s respite.

They are likely to enjoy another tomorrow, when a flat finish at the end of a 134km frun from Longarone to Treviso will offer a chance of glory to the sprinters.

Yanto Barker (Team UK Youth) has won the opening round of the Pearl Izumi Tour Series.

The Welshman outsprinted Tom Scully (Team Raleigh) and Mike Northey (Node4-Giordana) to take victory in Kirkcaldy.

The three-men had broken clear of the field, but Barker showed a decisive turn of speed in the final dash for the line.

Nottingham-based Team Raleigh head the team standings after placing three men in the top six, and so doing enough to head off the challenge of Team UK Youth and Rapha Condor JLT.

Felix English (Rapha Condor JLT) produced a strong ride to finish fourth, spending much of the race out front with the leaders before succumbing to cramp in the closing stages.

Alexandre Blain, winner of stage two of this year’s Tour of Normandie, continued his fine form for Raleigh by taking the first of two intermediate sprints, and winning the bunch sprint for the minor placings after the aforementioned quartet had finished.

Richard Lang was fifth, gaining vital team competition points for his Rapha Condor JLT squad.

Northey heads the IG Sprints standings ahead of Scully and Blain, while further evidence for the deserving nature of Barker’s win could be found in his position at the head of the Costa Express Fastest Lap standings.

The series moves to Durham city on Thursday, where Kristian House (Rapha Condor JLT) won last year.
