There are not enough cycle lanes being built

The CTC is disappointed with the lack of new cycle lanes being built or painted in England, with the Department for Transport admitting recently that investment in cycle lanes has been reduced.

Cycle lanes being laid in 2001-2 amounted to 405km, but dropped to just 140km in 2006-7, a 65% drop over the five year period. Also, the average length of cycle lanes has declined from 869m to 553m.

This is one statistic that the UK’s national cyclists’ organisation isn’t too pleased about and the CTC is calling for local authorities to dedicate at least 10% of their transport budget to walking and cycling.

CTC’s Policy Co-ordinator Chris Peck says: “This isn’t a surprise in a country where we spend 70 times more on roads than on cycling. What is even worse is even the few cycle lanes that are installed are too short and narrow, and often end where they are most needed.”
