Rouleur Road Bike Maintenance Evening

A new series of events presented by Rohan Dubash (Dr. D) and Rouleur’s Editor Guy Andrews, Rouleur’s Road Bike Maintenance Evenings are intended to give road cyclists the basic to intermediate knowhow to sort those irritating niggles and problems that stop a bike functioning properly.

The opening evening, on Monday, December 5, is a must for all those who travel with their bikes to remote locations and ride on a daily basis, and will be a great start to learning how to fix a bike without outside assistance.

Rohan and Guy have identified seven of what they believe are the main problems that affect road riders, and will endeavour to pass on some of the little secrets that they have learnt with over 50 years of experience between them.

1. Punctures. Fitting a tyre and tube properly, how to mend a flat out on the road – quickly and without mistakes – and how to do it without the use of the dreaded tyre lever.

2. Gear adjustments. Campagnolo, Shimano and SRAM. Indexing all dialled-in and purring nicely.

3. Brake adjustments. Pad seating, pad direction, cable adjustments and brake centring. Also wheel rim health and all the pitfalls of poorly adjusted stoppers.

4. Aheadset adjustment. How it works, including: changing stems, adjusting bearing play and fitting spacers.

5. Chain Hygiene. Looking after the most important part of the drive train and also orientation, rejoining and service life.

6. Creaks and Squeaks. Your bike is groaning and no idea what it might be? A few hints on what to look out for.

7. Bike fit. Adjusting your position and how to note down exactly the right fitting measurements for transferring to other bikes.

The wrenches

Rohan ‘Dr. D.’ Dubash is an experienced bike mechanic and technical writer, perhaps the most pedantic (by his own admission) technician in the business and one whose bikes are always presented perfectly, to pristine concours standards. Rohan also knows exactly what is ‘right’ when constructing a bike, what works and what doesn’t. All of this knowledge has earned him the nickname Dr. D – so if you don’t know, just ask the Doctor.

Guy Andrews is the editor of Rouleur magazine and has written several books on the subject of bicycle maintenance and the building of custom bicycles. He also spent many happy days in a workshop with Rohan, learning plenty from him about Italian bicycles and components whilst listening to 1980s pop.
