Cycling-inspired art exhibition heads to London’s West End

Photography and paintings combine to capture the stories behind British cycle sport's headlines

Cycling and art come together in London’s West End this month, with an exhibition featuring a host of Britain’s Olympic heroes and world champions.

A collaboration between photographer Geoff Waugh and painter Vince Kamp, called ‘Beyond the Peloton’, goes beyond the action to capture the more candid moments of cycling.

The likes of Sir Chris Hoy, Sir Bradley Wiggins, Laura Trott and Dame Sarah Storey all feature in the exhibition, with Waugh’s original stills re-worked into paintings by Kamp.

Waugh, an internationally-published photographer, said: “When Vince broached the idea I was into it immediately.

“This is the first time I have joined with a painter for an exhibition and to see extra-large prints next to Vince’s big canvasses with their broad brush strokes will look amazing.

“We timed the show as cycle fans begin to get excited about the Tour de France which begins at the start of July. Beyond the Peloton will be the very best way to enjoy build up, as well as offering the chance to own one-off pieces of original cycling art.”

A book, containing more images of the best of British cycle sport, will also support the show, which will be held at the Artefeact Gallery at 36 Windmill Street from June 15 to June 21.

Both men hope to take the exhibition on tour to major cycling centres around the UK, with Kamp explaining his motivation for the paintings as being to depict the stories behind the headlines.

He said: “I had this idea to make pictures that show more than just the standard ‘arms in the air’ victory shot because cycle racing is so much more than that.

“It is the preparation, the meditation and quite often the pain. To collaborate like this is such an exciting prospect.”
