Thousands head to Wales to slay the dragon

Thousands of cyclists headed to South Wales to slay the dragon at the 12th annual Wiggle Dragon Ride at the weekend.

One of the most popular UK sportives on the calendar saw more than 5,000 riders head to the valleys to conquer the rugged, undulating Welsh mountain terrain – including the 302km Dragon Devil Ride.

Taking on the iconic Devil’s Elbow ascent and Black Mountain, the sportive also included – for the first time – riders on the Dragon Tour.

Tackling 100 miles on the Friday and again on the Saturday, the Tour then concluded with the leg-burning Dragon Devil.

Tour riders also got to share a special dinner with 1987 Triple Crown winner Stephen Roche, who joked: “The Wiggle Dragon Ride has become world renowned event so I thought it was about time I came to see what all the fuss is about.

Organised by Human Race – whose next major event is the inaugural L’Etape London by the Tour de France in September – the event helps to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The Wiggle Dragon Ride is already confirmed to return in 2016, and those tempted to attempt it can register their interest at www.wiggledragonride.com.
