RCUK/Andy Cook Alps Training Camp

Andy Cook Training Week /Weekend

Andy Cook Training Week /Weekend

The roadcyclinguk.com/Andy Cook Alps Training Camp, from Saturday 6th to Sunday 14th June 2009, will include Time Megeve Mont Blanc cyclosportive, visit to UCI HQ and Aigle velodrome and optional partner/family activities.

The RCUK/Andy Cook Alps Training Camp will be based in Les Gets in the Northern Alps and will be attended by RCUK’s Richard Hallett and David Arthur.

Following a reconnaissance trip to re-visit the area after an absence of a few years, Andy wrote: “I believe that the Northern Alps has some of the best bike riding in the world. Our base in Les Gets is close to many famous climbs, including the cols de la Colombiere, des Aravis, des Saisies, de la Forclaz, de la Madeleine, and du Joux Plane, the Cormet de Roselend and Mont Revard.

We are just 10 mins ride from Morzine, which is a regular start/finish village for the Tour de France. I have organised an interesting and varied programme that will allow participants to train hard during the week, recover and relax with other activities and then take part in the Time Megeve Mont Blanc sportive. Attracting some 2500 entrants, the event starts from Megeve and includes 4000m of climbing over the 145km of the long route. There are also medium and short route options.”

The format for the week will have some flexibility built in in order to accommodate varied ability levels and weather conditions. The main emphasis will be on riding in groups and experiencing the major climbs of this part of the world. We will be offering different riding groups as necessary with vehicle backup available if required.

On the Thursday, we have organised a visit to the UCI headquarters and World Cycling Centre in Aigle, Switzerland. This includes the chance to ride the 200m indoor timber velodrome.

As a break from riding for those that want it, there is an opportunity for attendees to take part in one of two activities on Friday: Via Ferrata, which allows you to climb high mountains in total safety and with no experience as there are cables pinned to the mountain and Canyoning, which is particularly exciting in the Alps. All safety equipment required will be provided and the activities will take place under the expert tuition of highly qualified guides.

For those who would like to come for the weekend of the Time Megeve Mont Blanc only, arrivals are Thursday evening. Friday will be a 100km ride, with an easy ride on the Saturday and the sportive on the Sunday.

Family members who do not want to cycle are very welcome and can take part in a host of other optional activities such as Hill Walking, Climbing, Via Ferrata and Mountain Biking. Alternatively, they can simply enjoy the beautiful mountain scenery throughout the week.

The week will be based at La Clusaz on the outskirts of Les Gets. Accommodation will be on half board basis (bed, breakfast & evening meal) and will include all road transport, but will not include flights.
