Connectivity
Connectivity
Connectivity is something we’ve touched on already. The Apple Sport will feature Bluetooth as its primary means of wireless communication, which makes sense given that the iPhone also features Bluetooth.
But from a cyclists’ perspective, that means the watch won’t be able to talk to the mountains of ANT+ compatible sensors already on the market. A growing number of devices, includes the Stages power meter, have both Bluetooth and ANT+ connectivity, but inevitably the Apple Watch’s lack of ANT+ means it won’t be able to display data from a wide range of cycling-specific tech. Of course, the Apple Watch wasn’t designed specifically for cyclists – and, more likely, general fitness users – but it’s something we’d like to see.
While Bluetooth is definitely becoming more popular, especially with the advent of Bluetooth Low Energy, Apple will still be relying on more third parties starting to include Bluetooth connectivity in their devices.
