Size and shape
Size and shape
Before you even think about what you want on a multi-tool, the size and shape is definitely something to consider.
For a start, the less obtrusive and bulky it is, the less valuable space it’ll take up in a jersey pocket or saddlepack. The easier it is to carry, the more you’ll be able to carry with you by way of inner tubes, food, clothing and the like.
On the other hand, you need to think about what it’ll be like to use. The smallest, sleekest tool might look awesome, but try tightening with it and your hands will start to ache and, worst case scenario, you won’t be able to tighten the parts enough. Similarly, if you’ve got large hands you want something that you’ll be able to use easily, not something you’ll be fumbling with and cursing as your group decide that twenty minutes is enough and they’re going to ride on!
Obviously, most people don’t have the luxury of trying multiple tools before they finally make a purchase but it’s definitely worth asking around your riding buddies to see if there are a couple of different brands you can try out. It’s possible that your local shop might have a few out of the packets in case of emergency too, so check and see if they mind you having a go. Just don’t try it then walk out and buy online. That’s how bad bike shop Karma begins.
