Core Bike Show 2014: Ritchey, Stages, Gaerne, DMT, Lynskey

Wheels, power meters, shoes and more from Core

Ritchey’s updated range of Apex full carbon wheels now feature the US firm’s new Phantom Flange hub design.

The Apex hoops are part of Ritchey’s WCS (World Championship Series) range of high-performance components and four wheelsets make up the range: the Apex 38, Apex 50 and Apex 88 are available as tubulars, while the Apex 46 comes as a carbon clincher.

The Apex 46’s Phantom Flange hub allows Ritchey to use traditional J-bend spokes while giving the appearance of a straight-pull hub

The Apex 46 is pitched as a “race-ready full carbon clincher that won’t break the bank”, with a retail price of £1,220 and a claimed weight 1,526g (675g front/851g rear). It’s a price and weight which puts the Apex 46 in direct competition with the Reynolds Assault SLG we also saw at Core.

The new hub can be disassembled by hand

The Phantom Flange hub, which uses a six-pawl, 12-point engagement, allows Ritchey to use traditional (Sapim CX) J-bend spokes, said to be more reliable and easier to source if in need of a replacement, while giving the aero-profile of a modern, straight-pull hub. The hub, which weighs a claimed 70g at the front and 207g at the rear, can also be dissembled by hand to improve ease of servicing.
