Italian manufacturer Gaerne had a selection of new shoes to show us.
The Bora is a popular model in the range, Gaerne’s man at Core told us, and the 2014 iteration has a revised design, with a new low-profile buckle and composite sole.
The mid-range, £149.99 shoe is available in two colours and the ‘Reflex’ finish pictured above caught our eye – quite literally. The shoe has a subtle, matte silver finish in daylight but turn the lights off and point a camera flash at it – or, more importantly, car headlights – and the shoe is impossible to miss, particularly when your feet are spinning at 90RPM while pedaling.
It looks a sensible option for those who ride regularly in low light, though UK riders will have their feet covered by overshoes/socks for a fair proportion of the year. It also made us wonder why more manufacturers, be it shoes, wheels or components, don’t incorporate more subtle high-vis detailing. Still, if that’s not your thing then the Bora also comes in white.
Meanwhile, the Speed shoe is now available in the matte black ‘Plus’ finish pictured above. The £279.99 shoe, which sits below the range-topping G Chrono, uses a single BOA closure in conjunction with a velcro strap, while a full carbon sole keeps things stiff and light (claimed weight 272g per shoe).
