The Genesis Equilibrium will be well known to readers of RCUK.
A 2010 Equilibrium 20 725 did sterling service as our test rig, and the Equilibrium Ti (revamped for model year 2014) was one of the many bikes through the doors of RCUK Towers last year for review. The Equilibrium Disc, however, is new.
It’s built around a disc-specific Reynolds 631 chassis, whose 27.2mm seat tube should offer a further concession to comfort, courtesy of greater compliance than a larger (and presumably less flexible) 31.6mm unit.
A Reynolds 631 fork adds to the traditional appearance of the Equilibrium Disc, with its gentle rake and sturdy-looking crown. Mudguard eyelets are a further indication of a machine that could serve a variety of purposes.
It’s equipped with Shimano 105 STI levers and derailleurs, and a non-series Shimano chainset. The wheelset makes for intriguing viewing. The H Plus Son rims are new to us: 25mm deep aluminium clinchers laced to Shimano’s second-from-top XT mountain bike hubs with 32 double-butted stainless steel spokes. The discs that (partly) give the bike its name are mechanically-operated units from Hayes, the CX Expert, equipped with 160mm rotors.
The Genesis Equilibrium Disc will cost £1499 and will be sold in six sizes from 50cm to 60cm. The frameset will sell or £549.99. Other machines in the Equilibrium stable for model year 2014 include the 20, the latest version of our Reynolds 725 friend, dressed this year in Shimano 105 (including hubs) and non-series Shimano chainset, and priced at £1299 (the frameset will be available separately, priced at £399.99); the £1,099.99 Equilibrium 10 (another Reynolds 725 frameset, but with a full Tiagra groupset), and the Equilibrium 00, a Reynolds 520 frame, equipped this year with carbon fork and full Shimano Sora groupset, priced at £899.99.
