When we first heard about Lezyne’s new Mega XL and Mega C head units back in July, there was a feature on both units that peaked our interest.
The US-Taiwanese company claims that the Mega C has a burn time of 32-hours, while its big brother can last a whopping two days (yes, you read that correctly). This is pretty impressive for a head unit, with both outlasting their Garmin and Wahoo competitors by a fair distance.

It’s clear that Lezyne is targeting the growing ultra-distance and Audax market here, while that sort of battery could come in handy when on a bikepacking tour where every gramme counts.
On to the units’ features; both have downloadable open source maps for full navigation, which is displayed in colour on the Mega C and in battery-extending monochrome on the Mega XL.
They do what you’d expect of a head unit in terms of measuring performance too, squeezing up to eight (or ten on the Mega XL) data readings onto the screen - including the biggies of speed, distance, cadence, power and heart rate. Thanks to their Bluetooth and ANT+ compatibility, you won’t be forking out for new sensors either.

On our scales, the Mega C weighs in at 80g, while the ever-so-slightly bulkier Mega XL is just six grammes heavier. Both have plastic shells and look pretty solid, and we’re looking forward to testing Lezyne’s claims that they have been designed for resilience in the “roughest riding conditions”.
In terms of pricing, both the Mega C and Mega XL units are £180, which seems pretty good value for money considering their features. They’re also both available as a ‘loaded’ bundle package that includes heart rate, speed and cadence sensors and an out-front mount.
Only time will tell if they’re a serious competitor to the Garmin old guard and young upstart Wahoo, but that battery life alone could help sway those whose on-bike exploits extends beyond 100 mile sportives.
