The Hutchinson Sector 28 tackles two recent trends – tubeless and wider rubber – head on.
The tyre’s name gives a clue as to its intended use, with the rubber developed for the cobblestone secteurs of Paris-Roubaix but it’s equally at home on the unbroken tarmac of the UK, and, thanks to its 28mm width (make sure your frame has clearance) and sturdy construction, particularly if you like to venture further afield.
This is a tubeless tyre so you run them without an inner tube on a tubeless-compatible rim with a squirt of sealant. Tubeless tyres eliminate the risk of pinch flats (there’s no tube to pinch), while the sealant should fill small cuts in the tyre with a minimal loss of pressure. You can also run a tubeless tyre at a lower pressure, improving comfort and the contact patch with the road. On the flip side, a tubeless tyre can be more difficult to setup than a traditional clincher, sometimes requiring a compressor to seal the tyre bead on the rim.
The dual compound construction combines an efficient rubber on the centre of the tyre with softer shoulders for excellent grip. Claimed weight remains respectable at 295g, ensuring the Sector 28 remains relatively quick while offering a supremely plush ride. You’d hope so given the equally inflated price tag.
