Next up, the Carbon base Layer is a long-sleeve polyester undershirt.
The base layer gets its name from the ‘FinoCarbon’ fabric, which has a ‘double jersey knit’ designed to offer 360 degrees of stretch and, with it, freedom of movement. As you’d expect from a base layer, Sugoi say the fabric serves to draw moisture away from the skin.
It’s a polyester fabric, rather than merino, so that perspiration should then continue its outward journey, rather than being retained in the material. Sugoi say there’s also a hint of carbon in the weave, which is said to be anti-bacterial and therefore improve the base layer’s ability to stay stink-free for longer.
The fabric is very soft to touch and the side that sits on the skin is brushed for comfort but also to trap warm air next to your body. The Carbon is a multi-purpose base layer but it’s still cut a little lower at the back, just not as low as you’d expect on a cycling-specific garment. The sizing is also particularly generous.
The base layer has flatlock seams, while the arms have a contoured cut with thumb loops at the end to stop the sleeve riding up, which could then expose any skin between your gloves and jacket to cold air, though that’s not something we’ve struggled with when wearing other base layers without thumb loops.
The Carbon base layer comes in six sizes, from extra-small to extra-extra-large, and costs £34.99.
