Garmin Edge 1000
Garmin Edge 1000
What sets Garmin’s flagship computer, the Edge 1000, apart from the Edge 810, then?
First up, there’s the screen. It’s a significant improvement over the 810, being bigger at 3.9cm x 6.5cm (compared to 3.6cm x 5.5cm) and with a higher resolution, which provides a clear, colour display to show off the computer’s many features. The screen also has an integrated ambient light sensor that automatically adjusts the brightness to changing light conditions.
The Edge 1000 is ANT+ and Bluetooth compatible, and able to display just about any data metric you want. Riders can customise activity profiles according to what bike they’re using and each profile can display up to five screens of data, with a maximum of ten data fields per screen. Despite the wealth of data, the large screen and high resolution ensures it’s all easy to read.
The computer shares the same first-class data capabilities as the Edge 520, displaying a range of basic and advanced metrics, from speed to Functional Threshold Power, and, like the 520, can be integrated with Shimano Di2 or Garmin’s own Vector power meter. Users can also create their own custom workouts based on training goals, with the computer then providing indicators as to when an interval starts and the heart rate/power required, for example. The Edge 1000 is also the only Garmin computer to have a built-in training calendar.
Once you’ve finished your ride you then get the option of wirelessly uploading the recorded data using either Bluetooth or WiFi (the 1000 is the only Garmin computer with WiFi connectivity). Like all of Garmin’s Bluetooth-connected computers, there’s also the option to use LiveTrack, which means anyone you invite can view your ride live on a Garmin Connect tracking page, as well as call/text notifications and weather updates.
The Edge 1000’s improved screen really comes into its own when it comes to mapping. The computer, which uses GPS and GLONASS satellites, comes pre-installed with Garmin Cycle Map for Europe (there’s also a microSD card slot if you want to upgrade the maps) and offers detailed turn-by-turn navigation and round-trip planning.
