How to service cup and cone hubs

Pros and cons of Shimano-favoured bearing system; cleaning, inspecting and replacing

Step four: Grease the cup and install the bearings

Apply a light coating of grease to the driveside hub shell. Carefully place the bearings into the cup, using a pick if necessary to guide them into place. Reinsert the axle into the hub from the driveside, pressing the cone against the bearings.

A grease gun makes applying grease to bearings a simple task

Holding the cone against the driveside bearings with one hand, turn the wheel over, apply a light coating of grease to the non-driveside hubshell, and replace the bearings. Carefully place the bearings into the cup, using a pick if necessary to guide them into place. Screw the cone, spacer, and lock ring back onto the non-driveside of the axle.
