How to service cup and cone hubs

Pros and cons of Shimano-favoured bearing system; cleaning, inspecting and replacing

Step five: tighten the cone

Tightening the cone is a skilled operation and one that becomes easier with practice. Using two spanners, one for the cone and another for the lock ring, gently tighten the cone until they it presses against the bearings.

Tightening the cone is a skilled operation. Be prepared to make a few attempts

Over-tightening the cone will impede the movement of the bearings and slow the rotation of the hub. Leave the cone too loose, however, and you’ll experience ‘play’ that allows the hub to move on the axle. Tightening the lock rings may also cause unwanted movement. Be prepared to make a few attempts before finding the optimum setting.
