Some chains come pre-lubricated and while some people degrease it before use, Jon prefers not to, instead letting it run until it needs lubing and then continuing with his lube of choice

Compatibility
While there is likely to be a degree of compatibility between chains and drivetrains from rival manufacturers, Jon avoids this.
He cites the growing complexity of drivetrains – increased numbers of sprockets, shift ramps, chains with specific orientation – as an argument for running a coordinated system.
Pre-lubricated chains
Most chains come pre-lubricated from the factory, perhaps to prevent it corroding in transit and storage, and sealed in a plastic bag.
Some experts recommend degreasing a chain of its coating of factory lubrication before use, but Jon has never suffered any problems with it.
“They can be a little sticky, and pick up a little bit of dirt, but they run really sweetly,” he says. “Once it’s dirty enough to need degreasing, I’ll clean it and continue with my lube of choice, but I will fit a chain straight from the packet.”
