How to: Elinor Barker’s track cycling tips

Team pursuit world champion shares advice on getting started, training and stepping it up

With training, for us it depends what stage we are at in the season. For now I have a road week in Mallorca with no track at all, doing quite specific efforts because it’s quite close to the worlds. The last time I had a road week though, which was perhaps a month and a half ago, there was nothing specific – it was just about getting long miles in, and doing long rides over mountains and similar. When we get back from Mallorca, it is then just track and no gym and only minimal road – and even then that is just for recovery – just to get some real quality track riding in. So, it really does depend how far out you are from a major competition really.

For our training we mainly do team pursuit – it is after all the main discipline, which everyone wants to get into. But also, the training you do for team pursuit is going to help you in most track races really. You’ve got the pursuit efforts for team pursuit and your energy levels change while you are training, whether you are on the front or in the wheels, so you get recovery there, which is going to help in points and scratch races. We pretty much just more or less do team pursuit training with the odd upright session as well, just because it’s so helpful for every other race as well. The ideal training session would be individual pursuits.
