World-renowned bike fitter, author and physiotherapist Phil Burt has decided to go solo with Phil Burt Innovation – the goal being to offer professional-level services to the likes of you and I.
The features on offer include assessment and treatment for cycling-specific injuries, bike fit, and aerodynamic and saddle health assessments. All are administered at the state of the art Manchester Institute of Health and Performance, although appointments are also available in London.
With 12 years at British Cycling as Head of Physiotherapy, and a further five as consultant physiotherapist to Team Sky, Burt's work has directly contributed to a staggering 92 World Track Championship medals and a further 38 Olympic medals, alongside four Tour de France general classification victories.
"At Phil Burt Innovation we have some simple principles – a client-centred design process, using our holistic approach to bring all the inter-playing factors together so you can see and feel large improvements on the bike”
Phil Burt has been behind many training innovations now taken as the norm within professional cycling, including the introduction of warm-downs and off-bike conditioning to name but a few. It was this attention to detail that contributed to Team Sky's 'marginal gains' reputation.
“I believe that I have a different approach," explains Burt. "At the core of every service or product offered is a wholly holistic philosophy, developed over a decade by my work in elite sport.
"At Phil Burt Innovation, we have some simple principles – a client-centred design process, using our holistic approach to bring all the inter-playing factors together so you can see and feel large improvements on the bike.
"When we carry out any of our services it has to be all about you. We’re not interested in selling you a new bike, or expensive upgrades. We place a huge amount of importance on listening and understanding your goals. By establishing the goal of an assessment or bike fit, we can tailor our experience to get the results and the outcome you really want.”
Many elite cyclists have recognised Burt's efforts as tantamount with regard to their own successes. Team GB cycling legend Sir Chris Hoy was on hand at the launch to provide some first-hand experience of the physiotherapists expertise: "I worked with Phil for the last six years of my career and the physiotherapy support he provided was instrumental in allowing me to train and compete injury free. This was no mean feat considering I was 36 in London 2012, so for all his hard work and input he gave, I’m very grateful."
It's quite obvious when speaking to Burt that he's extremely passionate about all that he does; it seems his genuine care for peoples health is a motivational factor in launching the brand. At RoadCyclingUK we were lucky enough to have some time to ask Phil about what the future holds along with a few questions we've been itching to ask a bike fitter.
