With 4km to go, Italy's Ivan Basso (CSC) made the attack which won him both the stage and the overall lead on stage eight of the Giro.

With a strong ride from the CSC team, Basso was protected within the fast paced group before he broke away towards the summit of the Passo Lanciano, and the finish line.

He came in 30 seconds ahead of Damiano Cunego (Lampre) and Jose Gutierrez (Phonak) putting him up on Gutierrez by one minute in the overall standings. Cunego sat in third at 1:48.

On Monday's stage nine, 23-year-old Tomas Vaitkus (Ag2r) sprinted to win the race between Francavilla al Mare to Termoli.

He beat Basso in a photo finish but left the Italian CSC rider with the overall lead.
