Giro d’Italia 2014: stage nine – five observations

Orica-GreenEDGE success continues but Michele Scarponi's challenge ends

Though Cadel Evans went into the race as a serious contender for a podium place, having shown good form at the Tour Down Under and the Giro del Trentino, questions were still raised as to whether Aussie veteran could maintain a title challenge across a Grand Tour.

While Evans finished third last year, the way he faded at the Tour de France has not been forgotten in some minds, but, as far as the 2014 Giro is concerned, it’s so far, so good for Evans and BMC Racing.

A strong team time trial boosted his hopes, and when he, Steve Morabito and Daniel Oss hit the front of the bunch on stage six, thus avoiding the huge crash just behind them, he pushed on to move into a commanding position overall.

The maglia rosa followed on stage eight, after a great effort throughout the day, and Evans showed that hadn’t taken anything out of him as the team rode strongly to protect his lead on stage nine. With Morabito placed fifth overall, BMC will be taking in the second rest day very happy with their work so far.
