Giro d’Italia 2014: stage ten – five observations

Nacer Bouhanni causes FDJ headaches; Sky continue to push without reward

On the face of it, stage ten was another good day for Cadel Evans. Returning to the saddle after the rest day, maglia rosa on his shoulders, his team-mate’s efforts ensured he was safe when Tyler Farrar caused the huge crash and he even managed to bag ninth place on the stage.

But for Evans and BMC Racing, there was one downer on their day – Yannick Eijssen leaving the race in an ambulance after crashing. The Belgian, riding his first ever Giro, has been an important part of Evans’ support team so far and while his loss will not be felt as keenly as if it were one of squad’s more experienced domestiques, no team likes to lose a rider. BMC Racing have the resources to cope and adapt to the situation, but if his rivals are looking for any glimmer of hope perhaps this counts as one.
