Glasgow 2014: good signs for the Brits as Commonwealth Games kick off

Wiggo returns, McGlynn and Haston claim home nation's first medal, impressive Games debut for Emadi

Jason Kenny, Kian Emadi and Philip Hindes combined to earn silver for Team England in the men’s team sprint, putting a disappointing individual sprint session behind them with a strong comeback in the afternoon.

Emadi did not ride the individual sprint, and certainly benefitted from fresh legs as he put in a phenomenal final lap in qualifying to break the Games record.

That world champions New Zealand went on to snatch the record – twice – showed the difference in class between the two teams, but  England’s ability to ride to a medal should be commended.

The trio – who are quite likely to be Great Britain’s Olympic team in Rio – have endured a difficult two years as they look to replace Sir Chris Hoy.

But in the Velodrome bearing the Scottish great’s name, Kian Emadi certainly proved he has the potential to do just that.

Germany and France will be among the extra opponents come the World Championships and Olympics, and it remains to be seen how the Brits match up.

You can only beat what is in front of you, however, and with the exception of the world champions, the English trio did exactly that.
