Tour de Romandie 2014: prologue – five observations

Michal Kwiatkowski continues fine form with time trial win

World time trial champion Tony Martin (Omega Pharma-Quickstep) has just one individual win against the clock to his name so far this season – victory on the final day of the Tour of the Basque Country sealing his second stage win of the race. However, despite finishing five seconds off the pace of team-mate Michal Kwiatkowski, there is no cause for concern for the German.

The course for the prologue, lacking any long straights and with a headwind by the time Martin hit the course, did not play to the German’s strengths. Yet still, he secured fifth place for the stage. Come the individual time trial which concludes the Tour de Romandie, Martin will still be a huge favourite to win the stage for the second consecutive year. A few technical sections feature on the course, but with long flat straights on the road from and to Neuchatel, it is difficult to look beyond another win for the man in the rainbow-striped skinsuit.
