Tour de Romandie 2014: stage two – five observations

Chris Froome finds legs as Tejay van Garderen continues to struggle

It was like a London bus – you wait ten years for a Swiss victory at the Tour de Romandie, and then two come along on consecutive days. Albasini’s stage one victory was impressive enough, a comfortable sprint success at the end of a short but tough day. His stage two win however shows his sprinting prowess should be taken much more seriously. When Michal Kwiatkowski led out the sprint, Albasini was several places back and almost boxed in.

But with perfect timing, the Swiss ace found the wheel of Giacomo Nizzolo (Trek Factory Racing), coming around the outside of the Italian fast man to claim the yellow jersey. With four category one climbs en route for stage three, his time in yellow may well be restricted to a single day – though he proved in Catalonia, in 2012, that he and his Orica-GreenEDGE team-mates are more than capable of defending a lead on undulating stages. Even if it is for just one day, however, it is a thoroughly deserved moment in the sun for the Swiss.
