Tour de Romandie 2014: stage two – five observations

Chris Froome finds legs as Tejay van Garderen continues to struggle

Though he won at the Tour de San Luis at the start of the year, Giacomo Nizzolo (Trek Factory Racing) has not won a WorldTour race since a stage victory at the Eneco Tour in 2012. Stage two of the Tour de Romandie looked perfectly set up for the Italian sprinter, but the ease with which Michael Albasini outpaced him will be a cause for concern with the Giro d’Italia less than a week away.

Nizzolo is set to lead Trek Factory Racing’s charge for sprint victories at the Giro in a bid to better his four top-five finishes last time out. And while he proved he had the legs to last over the moderate climbs – something his likely rival in Italy, Marcel Kittel (Giant-Shimano), did not have – he must work on his sprint if he is to seal a first career stage victory in his home country’s Grand Tour.
