Let’s be clear – one win is no reason to get carried away.
Andre Greipel may have stormed to victory at Victor Harbour but he has admitted himself he has already made mistakes in the sprint this year – and the season is barely a week old. However, the nature of his victory was what stood out – Greipel’s lead-out, in testing conditions, was such that the sprinters remaining in the leading group simply did not even get a sniff. That team-mate Jurgen Roelandts finished second highlights just how efficiently the Lotto-Belisol sprint train worked.
RCUK witnessed the Lotto-Belisol sprint train first-hand last winter, and the work that goes into it, and such hard work was rewarded in style on this occasion. Even when Omega Pharma-Quickstep’s Jan Bakelants and Serge Pauwels made a daring late attack, the Lotto-Belisol train remained unperturbed to set up the win. It was not just the final kilometres where they impressed either – that the Belgian team reached Victor Harbour with six riders still intact was highly impressive. The all-round strength of Greipel and his lead-out team means this victory certainly will not be a one-off.
