Cadel Evans (BMC Racing) has been written off on more than one occassion but the veteran Australia has made a habit of proving his doubters wrong.
The 37-year-old was up to his old tricks again on stage one – ably backed by a fiercely strong BMC Racing team. As riders were repeatedly shelled out the back, including the likes of world champion Rui Costa (Lampre-Merida) and Belkin’s Bauke Mollema, Evans stayed well-placed in the leading group.
And the Tour Down Under runner-up, who harbours major ambitions for the Giro d’Italia in May, was rewarded for his and his team’s efforts with eighth place on the stage – a steady return with a podium place certainly within reach.
Evans’ acceleration on the Corkscrew at the Tour Down Under showed the 2011 Tour de France winner means business this season and the veteran continues to show he’s able to mix it up at the sharp end of the race. Never count him out.
