Tour of the Basque Country: stage four – five observations

Wout Poels shines, Alejandro Valverde attacks and Simon Yates impresses

In the record books it will leave little mark, a short-lived attack which briefly earned Simon Yates (Orica-GreenEDGE) some breathing space before he was swallowed up by the elite chasing group. But for the 21-year-old from Bury, it was another reminder of exactly what he can do and keeps him well-placed for a top-ten finish overall and his first ever WorldTour points.

Both Simon and twin brother Adam have enjoyed plenty of plaudits in their neo-pro year with Orica-GreenEDGE – both pulling hard on the bunch on stage three, too – and both have justified the high hopes British Cycling have of their two protégées. Even if Yates is unable to grab a top-ten spot it is another important step on his journey to – hopefully – the top. There will be Grand Tour places available this year, and keeping their profiles high will do neither of the twins any harm.
