While the men struggled, the women showed plenty of encouraging signs – not least Laura Trott on her way to another silver medal in the omnium.
As Olympic champion there will be some who expect more of the 21-year-old, but the signs of progress ahead of Rio, where it really matters – and only a great ride by Sarah Hammer denied her gold.
Trott’s performance in the points race was a vast improvement on her previous efforts and showed the profit of the work she has put into the event alongside coach Chris Newton, himself a former points race world champion and Olympic bronze medallist.
Hammer and Australia’s Annette Edmondson remain Trott’s greatest rivals in the omnium but, as the 21-year-old pointed out in her post-race interview in Cali, at this point prior to London 2012 she was still a junior. Two years out from her second Olympics and Trott is showing no sign of losing her title as Britain’s track queen.
