The 2010 showdown between Fabian Cancellara and Tom Boonen was hotly anticipated. Both riders were wearing their national championship colours and Boonen was aiming for this third Ronde in a row. Spartacus was yet to register a win in the Belgian Monument but had beaten Tommeke at E3 a week earlier.
The two were clearly the strongest riders in the field, and had broken away together more than 40km from the finish, but when they hit the Muur the Swiss found an acceleration that Boonen just couldn’t match and soloed to victory.
It also has one of the best bits of commentary ever when, after Cancellara starts to distance Boonen at 8:41mins in, all the co-commentator can muster is “aiyaiyaiyaiyaiyaiyaiya”, summing up the feelings of the whole of Belgium at that moment.
