As a Belgian, seeing a home rider win the Ronde is just about the most exciting thing that can happen in the world of bike racing.
So imagine the levels of euphoria in 1999 when three bona fide Belgian legends shot off the front and went head-to-head (to head) in a three-up sprint for the win. Despite the best efforts of Van Petegem, jumping the Lion of Flanders and VBD as the two stared at each other instead of chasing, the trio ended up sprinting for the win in a truly dramatic finish.
