Pelvis? Who needs a pelvis?
Pelvis? Who needs a pelvis?
You might think there are certain body parts you’d need in top knick before undertaking something as huge and intimidating as the Tour de France. Feet would be one, legs a certainty, and you’d probably be hard pushed to ride a bike without your pelvis too, right?
Nope. In 2013 Thomas rode pretty much the entire Tour de France with a fractured pelvis, which he sustained in a crash on the very first stage on Corsica. The Welshman was part of a multi-rider pile-up that happened as a result of the chaos caused by the Orica-GreenEDGE getting stuck under the finish line gantry and a last-minute change to the course, and the next day a fracture on his pelvis was confirmed by X-ray.
Each day Thomas was helped onto his bike before the racing began, but he managed to soldier through and ably assisted the eventual winner Chris Froome by the end of the third week.
