Apocalypse Wow
Apocalypse Wow
Last season Geraint Thomas competed at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, proudly representing his home nation of Wales, rather than Great Britain, with whom he won Olympic team pursuit gold in 2008 and 2012.
Thomas overcame – and thrived in – some truly apocalyptic weather conditions during the men’s road race, attacking Jack Bauer and Scott Thwaites on the final lap (watch Thomas’ attack from 7m40s in the video above) and soloing to victory, finishing first in a truly attritional race that only 11 other riders managed to complete, with a 1:27-minute advantage over second-placed Bauer.
Two of Thomas’ Welsh team-mates, Luke Rowe and Scott Davies, were also able to hang tough until the end, proving that they make them tough in those parts. And did we mention that Thomas had only finished the Tour de France a week earlier, and had secured bronze in the Commonwealth time trial only days before? Or that he got a heart-stopping puncture in the closing kilometres with only a slender lead over Bauer? Epic stuff.
