Amstel Gold Race 2014: preview

Defending champion Roman Kreuziger leads strong field for first Ardennes Classic

Winner in 2008, Lampre-Merida’s Damiano Cunego knows what it takes to be first across the line at the Amstel Gold Race and showed he is coming into form by regularly featuring at the sharp end in the Basque Country.

Fourth at both Strade Bianche and the GP di Lugano earlier in the year, the three-time former Il Lombardia winner has found success hard to come by in recent years, but with good form behind him a bit of luck could change all that.

The provisional startlist contains world champion Rui Costa and Diego Ulissi among the Italian’s support team – both also capable of a result, particularly in the case of Costa. Lampre-Merida are yet to confirm their line-up but if the provisional team proves correct, the team in fuchsia are likely to be on show towards the front of the bunch come Sunday.

Cunego’s critics will say his best form is behind him, while Costa is still chasing his first win as world champion, but the Amstel Gold Race could change all that.
