A list of climbers would not be complete without mention of at least one Colombian. And Fabio Duarte, who races on the back of finishing fourth at the Giro del Trentino, is in line to become the latest of his countrymen to make a name for himself at a Grand Tour. Team Colombia impressed last time out, Darwin Atapuma leading the way with a top 20 finish overall. This time out, it will be Fabio Duarte – second on the snow-hit stage 20 up the Tre Cime di Lavaredo last year – who will lead the team’s charge for success.
After overcoming the visa issue, which threatened to disrupt their preparations for the race, the team will be keen to show themselves at this year’s race. And Duarte – who was ninth in the Mountains classification in 2013 – is certainly more than capable of doing that. Alongside his strong showing at the Trentino, Duarte also finished tenth at the Criterium International and was fourth behind team-mate Jarlinson Pantano in the Tour Mediterraneen mountains classification. And Duarte and Pantano will both be keen to add the maglia azzurra to their CV as they look to attract interest from the WorldTour teams.
