A dark horse for the race, Peter Kennaugh comes into a Team Sky squad who had little to shout about at the Amstel Gold Race. Edvald Boasson Hagen’s 39th was their best result on the day, as their one-day woes returned. But Kennaugh could change all that at La Fleche as he continues to build his form in the 2014 season. Tipped as a future world champion by Rod Ellingworth, this is a chance to make his first real mark on a one-day race.
David Lopez and Mikel Nieve enjoy the higher profile in Team Sky’s squad of seven for the race, but Kennaugh has a point to prove after struggling at the Tour of the Basque Country. Now rested, the Coppi e Bartali winner starts the race as very much an outsider with little one-day pedigree so to speak of. But when the roads start heading skywards he has proved already he can handle it with the best and there is no reason the Mur de Huy should cause any fears for the Manxman.
