Tour de Suisse 2014: preview

World champion Rui Costa bids for third straight title

Paris-Nice winner Carlos Betancur has thrown Ag2r-La Mondiale’s preparations into disarray after ruling himself too ill to make his flight for the Tour de Suisse. With his Tour de France now in doubt too, the team will have to have a re-think but they still boast a strong line-up for Switzerland – not least Domenico Pozzovivo on the back of his Giro d’Italia performance.

Pozzovivo is more than capable on the climbs and proved that, while his rivals can make up time on his in the time trials, he is certainly no mug against the clock. With Davide Appollonio, Patrick Gretsch and Christophe Riblon among his team-mates in Switzerland, the French team will be hopeful of at least earning some stage wins in the mountains. And if Pozzovivo is in good enough shape to lead the charge for the full eight days, expect him to be among the contenders come the final weekend.
