Etixx-QuickStep don’t just use Oliva in winter, but also Calpe – located in the same dry region of southern Spain.
Also used by Tour de France champion Vincenzo Nibali’s Astana team, Calpe offers a more climbs for the QuickStep team to train on, and so is preferred during the second half of pre-season.
And, like Oliva, it is also ideally located for the teams’ riders to fly over for training camps.
Koen Lampert explained: “The hotels we stay in Calpe and Oliva are of very good quality and with Valencia and Alicante airports we have a lot of flight connections to get all riders here, which is important in our team with a lot of different nationalities.”
Katusha are also known to use Calpe, with the whole region a popular with cyclists – professional and amateur alike – thanks to its quiet roads, stunning scenery, varied terrain and ideal weather.
