Commonwealth Games champion Lizzie Armitstead (Boels-Dolmans) kicked off her 2015 season in the desert and stormed back to winning ways in the process.
A strong 2014 campaign, which saw the Yorkshire-woman win the UCI Women’s World Cup, could not be capped by a first world championship victory in Ponferrada.
But any disappointment Armitstead may have felt in Spain in September has quickly been forgotten after a top showing in the Ladies Tour of Qatar.
Third on stage two, as team-mate Ellen van Dijk took victory, Armitstead then won back-to-back stages to beat Chloe Hosking (Wiggle-Honda) to the golden jersey.
Also topping the points classification in the process, it is Armitstead’s first ever GC win despite her string of one-day successes and also the first time a Brit has won the Ladies Tour of Qatar.
