Training with the pros: Mark Renshaw talks sprinting and lead-outs

Mark Cavendish's right-hand man reveals how to prepare for the bunch gallop and reflects on being reunited with the Manxman this season

Omega Pharma-Quickstep will be renamed next year to the slightly less wordy Etixx-Quickstep as the nutritional arm of Omega Pharma take over as headline sponsor.

And at the end of a hard race, Renshaw believes it is vital for a rider to be fully fueled to perform to the best of their ability.

“Coming into the sprint, you have to have taken on the right amount of gels and sugars before you get to the finish because you can’t leave it too late.

“There is no use taking a gel with ten kilometres to go. You need to be looking at 20km, give it a chance to get into the system. It becomes easier with experience, but not just at the end, also when to eat and what to eat during the stage.

“You start with the bars, which are a little easier to eat, and then later on in the race you have the gels for the quick energy.”
