Cannondale have long pushed the boundaries when it comes to aluminium but it’s normally the American firm’s CAAD frames which hog the headlines. Step forward the Cannondale Hollowgram SisL2 chainset. The SisL2 is super-stiff and, well a super-light, chainset. Each hollow CNC-machined crank arm is made in two parts, with manufacturing process allowing Cannondale to remove as much metal as possible before bonding the two sides together in a clamshell design.
The chainrings and spider, meanwhile, are made from one piece of metal, being and then machined from a single billet of aluminium. The ten-arm design is by the wheels of a high-performance race car and the result is an incredibly chainset which ensures every watt is transferred from the pedals to the rear wheel. As for the weight? Cannondale state a claimed weight of just 483g, which makes the SiSL2 of the lightest chainsets available. Yes, you pay a significant price one that but this is aluminium manufacturing at its finest.
