Sussex-based Enigma Bicycle Works have forged a formidable reputation for building beautiful titanium and steel frames well-suited to the demands of UK riding. The Excel is Enigma’s flagship titanium chassis and is made from 6Al-4V tubing, whereas most titanium frames are made from a 3Al-2.5V alloy. It’s a harder metal and more complex to work with but is stronger, stiffer and lighter, without sacrificing the natural comfort associated with titanium.
The Enigma Excel now has a 44mm headtube that can accommodate a tapered headtube, beefing up the front-end and thus improving stiffness and braking performance. It’s a frame designed for the fast sportive rider or racer – the geometry is relatively low and long – and our time on the Enigma Excel revealed it as a machine which delivers a superb balance of performance and ride quality. The frameset is yours for £2,285, while the machine featured, in a suitably high-end build with Shimano Dura-Ace, Mavic wheels and Enve finishing kit, is £6,275.
