The UK is home to the Formula One industry, perhaps the pinnacle of carbon fibre production in sport, but little of that home-grown expertise extends to the bicycle industry. Nerve Bikes are set to change that, and have now started UK production on their flagship Nerve 600SL carbon fibre chassis – combining the knowledge of Mark Reilly, one of the UK’s foremost frame builders, and carbon specialist Neil Fitzgerald, whose background is in Formula One.
As a result, Nerve will join a very select group of companies manufacturing carbon fibre frames in the UK but, while the absurdly light, 650g, fully-custom Nerve 600SL, which costs £2,999, steals the headlines, the carbon fibre range also includes a ‘sportive’ frame and a disc-equipped model. Titanium and steel frames will also be built in the Newhaven workshop, alongside a Signature range of bikes which bear Reilly’s name of the downtube, such is the draw of Nerve’s chief frame builder.
Price: £2,999 (frameset only)
