Reynolds 90 Aero Wheelset 2015 Review

Nothing can match a super-deep wheelset in its ability to make a bike look and, in the right conditions and on appropriate terrain, ride fast. The Reynolds 90 Aero is, as the name suggests, 90mm-deep and part of the American firm’s Aero line-up, where speed is of the essence. While the majority of aero wheels, including the Zipp 404 Firecrest, follow the current trend for a blunt, rounded spoke face, the 90 Aero bucks the trend with an airfoil rim profile dubbed Dispersive Effect Termination and borrowed from Reynolds’ flagship RZR range.

Reynolds founder and aerodynamic guru Paul Lew says the Reynolds 90 Aero’s sharper, v-shaped profile smooths airflow from the tyre to the trailing edge of the wheel, reducing drag and, paired with the beefy 26.2mm-wide brake track, improving handling, Needless to say, the 90 Aero’s depth comes at a weight penalty (1,875g) but this is a wheelset for fast road races and time trials, not a mountainous sportive or the Sunday club run.
